The Profs: Basics

The Profs have seven sub-divisions in their gang but are not as divisive as others. They take their name from "professors" because their works pertain to science, society, and history. Their worlds involve a different kind of creativity than that of the Fantoms, and the more scholarly minds are found here. They associate well with all the genres, and they are open to learning from and about the non-print materials.

The Gang

Alts: a sub-group for alternate histories.

Commanders: a sub-group for sci-fi novels with militaristic focuses.

Cybers: a sub-group dedicated to cyberpunk novels.

Gadgets: a sub-group made up of steampunk novels.

Labs: a sub-group for the hard science sci-fi novels.

Ologists: a sub-group focusing on soft science sci-fi novels. It takes it's name from the endings of the soft sciences - anthropology, sociology, psychology...

Poxes: a sub-group for post-apocalyptic or dystopian novels. They take their name from "apocalypse" and turn it into a play on the word "pox", as a virus is sometimes the way the world nearly ends.

Internal Relations

The Profs have many sub-groups but no real divisions. The main biases are the hard vs soft sciences. The different sci-fi novels have different opinions about the military, too. These biases, however, are not enough to divide them. They are united primarily by their quest for knowledge and solutions. The Profs want to answer societal issues, to propose new scenarios and see how they play out, to create new technologies, and to explore new worlds.

External Relations

The Profs get along well with all genres and, except for the Terrors, are the most relaxed when it comes to the struggle over shelf space. That issue takes the back-burner to the more pressing scientific and societal questions the Profs seek to engage. Because of this, the other genres do not focus their efforts against the Profs, and they respect them as balanced and educated, if sometimes a little too logical or distant. Each genre has something in common with the Profs or something they can learn from them. The gang they have the closest ties with, however, is the Fantoms. They are also close with the non-fiction, but unlike other gangs with such affiliations, the Profs are rarely judged for it.
