Lalli's Exorcism

(Fixing the Radio)

pg. 278

Finnish: Minna Sundberg
Translation 1 & Notes: Incanus01
Translation 2: Polgara
Translation 3: partofacitygiant

Original & Source

Finnish

Kuulkaa henget hämärtyneet
Tuonen tieltä erehtyneet,
Pyydän puhtahalla suulla
anon sulosanasilla:

Vaeltakaa väljemmälle,
kulkekaa jo kauemmalle,
muiden kujien kulmille,
toisten talojen turuille.

Sitä lausun
jotta käsken:
vaiti väki
vaivalloinen,

tahikka tei'ät manoan!
Nostan luontoni lovesta,
vieritän verisen kiven,
vieraat varjoihin kiroan!

Translation 1

Harken to me spirits faded
gone astray from paths of Tuoni
with speech pure I now beseech thee,
pray with words of sweetest cadence.

Wander ways away from this place,
journey farther ever from here,
corners to of unknown alleys
neighbourhoods of other dwellings

This I utter,
thus command I:
Silence to thee
folk most vexing.

Or I shall now all abjure thee
spirit mine incite from dream-state,
stone of blood will cast upon thee
curse outsiders to the shadows!

-------------------

Additional notes by Incanus01:

"Nostan luontoni lovesta" is a very difficult thing to translate as "lovi" is the trance or dreamstate which a Finnish shaman would try to achieve by uttering incantations, dancing, swaying his body etc. so he could perform his magic and travel to the land of dreams and Tuonela. "Luonto" means "nature" but here specifically "the spirit of the shaman/mage" or "his own birthspirit" which was something akin to a "soul" or "spiritual strength".

So basically Lalli is threatening the spirits that he will invoke his own spirit to drive them away and to bolster his curse with his very mage essence.

It is a bit like "raising the spirit" which means in this context of invoking or inflaming your spirit so that it is full of energy for whatever purpose, either for good or for evil.

Translation 2

Hear my words - spirits lingering in the dusk,
lost on the road to Tuonela
I’m praying with mouth most pure,
pleading with words so sweet

Wander to spaces more sparce,
span farther afar
to other alleyways,
aflied another homesteads

I hearby state and command thee
to quieten you, burdensome force

Unless you hearken I’ll invoke you
Upthrusting my true nature
Scrolling rock bathed in the blood,
swearing strangers back to shades.

Translation 3

Hear you spirits, who have faded
diverted from paths of Tuoni,
asking you by words not shaded
words mine good, you take true heed

you may make your wanders' widening
you may further go than biding
on the alleys of other towns
on the mounds of other houses

That I chant and I command
SILENT - you wearisome folk

or you'all I'll exorcise!
Shall rise my spirit through the cracks,
Shall roll the bloody stone,
Shall curse you be ever in the shades!

------------------------

and a note by Incanus01: Good job! http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif Although perhaps the second verse could be more literally:
"to the alleys of other towns
to the market places of other houses"

Turku means literally "a marketplace" or "village/town square". But you have poetic license when translating poetry. http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Summoning His Luonto

pg. 396

Finnish: Minna Sundberg
Translation 1, 2: Incanus01 (Mikko Ojala)
Translation 3: Imrar Theoman

Original & Source

Finnish

Tulehan jo tuekseni,
Noitumani nostajaksi,
Iskujeni iskijäksi,
Loitsujeni laulajaksi:

Väki, voima, ainoseni.
Vankka, vakaa, haltijani.

Vankkumaton
Luontoni.

Translation 1 & 2

Come o hither to my aid now
here to help to raise my magics
strike the blows on my behalf and
singer in my spells assisting.

Väki, power sole and single
Strong and steady guarding spirit
my own nature all unwavering.

-------------------

A more word-for-word translation by Mikko:

Come now to my aid
to raise up my chanting/spell casting
to strike my blows
to be the singer of my spells.

Väki, power, my only one (my dearest)
Strong and stout birth spirit/guardian spirit/genius
My unflinching/unwavering nature.

Translation 3

Come now for my aid,
Raising my enchantment,
Striking my blows,
Singing my spells.

Power, strength,
my only true.
Steadfast, sturdy
guardian.

My Unwavering
Spirit.
